Energy School Munich – a focus on young people

Since 2011, Munich Re Foundation has supported the Energy School Munich project of the environmental organisation Green City e.V. The educational project consists of four learning modules for students of different age groups, who learn about climate change and sustainability in a fun way during workshops at schools that last several days. Since 2022, the support of Munich Re Foundation has focused on the module ‘Energy with a Future’.

The workshops of the module ‘Energy with a Future’ are specifically aimed at young people in the 7th to 9th grades of middle schools who are about to graduate from school and start their apprenticeships or start their careers. On the one hand, they are intended to raise awareness of the consequences of the climate crisis worldwide and, on the other hand, to show them easy-to-implement and concrete, local opportunities for action that contribute to sustainable development – always with a clear reference to the individual lives of young people and to professional life. Integrating sustainability into one's profession is important, regardless of individual job profiles, working methods and environments.

During the workshops of the project ‘Energy for the Future’, schoolchildren collected their wishes for the planet.

    Training programme for teachers

In 2023, the project concept was expanded to include further training for teachers who can act as multipliers. In 2024, the training was implemented in practice for the first time.

The training offers insights into the project content as well as into methods of educational mediation, so that teachers are able to independently design the workshop ‘Energy with a Future’ or parts of it. Due to limited time resources and a generally high workload, teachers often have little capacity to independently prepare interactive learning methods on the topic of climate protection and sustainability. This is precisely where Green City's training courses come in, providing practical approaches and materials for integrating the topics of energy, climate protection and sustainability into the classroom in a creative way that young people can understand.

A total of five teacher training sessions were successfully held in 2024, reaching 40 teachers and educators. A workshop was offered as part of the Klimaherbst programme, which was fittingly themed around the 2024 Munich Klimaherbst festival's topic of ‘Economy, Work and Finance’. Another was organised for the ESD conference for vocational schools on ‘Sustainability in Companies’. The other two workshops took place in cooperation with the Anne-Frank-Realschule and the Campus die Monaco secondary school.

In 2024, the Energy School also offered workshops for teachers and multipliers for the first time.

Workshops on climate protection and sustainability in schools

The on-site workshops sponsored by the Munich Re Foundation took place at the Clara Grunwald Montessori School in Unterschleißheim at the beginning of December 2020. This expanded the project's reach beyond Munich's city limits. The cooperation with the Clara Grunwald School made it possible to test the project concept under different conditions than usual, for example in mixed-age classes. Together, the students developed ways in which they can actively support climate protection in both their private and professional lives. In view of the upcoming graduation of some of the students, the workshop combined the topics of climate protection and sustainability with career orientation and opened up new perspectives.
