Climate change

Dear readers, dear friends of the foundation,

Devastating floods in Brazil in April 2024, widespread flooding in Kenya in May 2024, massive flooding in southern Germany and Austria in June 2024, accompanied by very early, very hot heatwaves in India, China, the south-west of the USA and south-east Europe show one thing very clearly: climate-related disasters are occurring with increasing frequency and intensity worldwide. In order to mitigate the worst consequences, we need to take countermeasures with risk management instruments.

Disaster risk reduction (DRR) is particularly important in this context, which is why we are once again looking for a new RISK Award project from the first of July. The focus: children and youths as agents of change in disaster risk reduction.

DRR work is not very successful if the fundamental vulnerabilities of societies are not addressed at the same time. Poverty reduction and good education are prerequisites for sustainable development. We have also initiated many projects in these two areas in recent months and will continue to do so: We are once again preparing the world's largest conference on inclusive insurance (ICII 2024 in Nepal), and several learning sessions on microinsurance are in the pipeline. Here in Munich, we have been working with various formats (dialogue forums, workshops, etc.) on the topic of climate protection. Read more about the individual project progress in our new quarterly newsletter.
